Inspiring Vision: The Mapparium

Mapparium

This photo is from a place that many people often overlook because it is hidden inside the Mary Baker Eddy Library in Boston, Massachusetts. It is called the Mapparium, and it is a three-dimensional perspective of the world circa 1935. The Mapparium was conceived by the architect of the Christian Science Publishing Society building, Chester Lindsay Churchill, as a symbol for the global outreach of The Christian Science Monitor. Mary Baker Eddy founded the Monitor in 1908 and gave it the mission …

Two Beats Ahead: What Musical Minds Teach Us About Innovation by Panos A. Panay and R. Michael Hendrix

TwoBeatsAhead

If you are looking for a spark of inspiration, check out the book, Two Beats Ahead: What Musical Minds Teach Us About Innovation by Panos A. Panay and R. Michael Hendrix. After reading the book, I knew I had to have them join me on my Virtual Campfire podcast. So we recorded an episode, and I can't wait to release it.

In Two Beats Ahead, Panos and Michael interview some of the nation's top musicians and business leaders about how they approach innovation differently. They speak with Beyonce, Ph…

Revisiting Marketing Myopia

"People don't want to buy a quarter-inch drill; they want a quarter-inch hole." - Theodore Levitt

Have you ever taken a marketing class? I remember taking quite a few in my college years, and I have never forgotten one of the foundations of modern marketing: Marketing Myopia.

So, what is Marketing Myopia anyway? It is a concept introduced by Theodore Levitt in the 1960s that describes the ill-fated business practice of being too focused on selling products and services rather than seeing the "…

Soundtracks - Jon Acuff

One of the books that I recently read that has me thinking is Soundtracks by Jon Acuff. I had two reasons for picking it up, Jon Acuff (I am a huge fan) and the title (I love, music soundtracks especially when they are done well). Jon is an accomplished author with seven books under his belt, but I think this one is his best work.

Simply put, we all have soundtracks playing in our heads that have us overthinking almost everything. Jon proposes that overthinking isn’t a personality trait; it is …

We Are Complex Organisms Just Trying to Make Something Happen

ComplexSys

"The main character of any living system is openness." - Ilya Romanovich Prigogine

Have you ever been part of a group where there was one person who completely changed the dynamics? Maybe they were aggressive, or loud, or just plain old negative all the time. I am sure you have experienced this… I most definitely have.

As I have worked with leaders and their teams over the years, I have realized something fascinating related to group dynamics, and it is grounded in nature.

I have come to see …

Inspiring Vision: All the Flowers Are for Me

Illuminated Cube

I took this photo over Father's Day weekend during a long overdue trip to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. It is a truly amazing art installation because the entire room, including the people who enter it, becomes part of the canvas. Anila Quayyum Agha, a Pakistani-American cross-disciplinary artist, created this sculptural chamber of light and shadow that she called, All the Flowers Are for Me. This luminous installation provides an opportunity to contemplate the differences an…

Just Beyond Yourself - David Whyte

I recently re-discovered an amazing poem from David Whyte called Just Beyond Yourself, and I wanted to share it with you because I think it holds such a powerful message:

Just beyond yourself

It’s where you need to be

Half a step into self-forgetting and the rest restored by what you’ll meet

There is a road always beckoning

When you see the two sides of it closing together at that far horizon and deep in the foundations of your own heart at exactly the same time,

That’s how you know it’s t…
