What is Your Little Island?

Little-Island-NYC

This is Little Island NYC, an artificial island park in the Hudson River west of Manhattan in New York City. It sits on the site of the old Pier 54, which Hurricane Sandy destroyed in 2012. It was designed by Heatherwick Studio and primarily funded by billionaires Barry Diller and Diane von Fürstenberg.

Built on 132 concrete pilings, Little Island is a welcome addition as the city emerges from the pandemic and is starving to connect to nature and the arts, which are both on display here. My fir…

"The stories we tell literally make the world. If you want to change the world, you need to change your story." – Michael Margolis

As I started to interview people for my podcast, The Virtual Campfire, I realized how powerful our personal stories can be. Our past is not something to run away from; it is something to embrace, reconcile with, and use as a powerful lever to move us into the future. When you commit to understanding and owning your true story, you uncover things you never clearly un…

This photo is from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, California, and is an exhibit of Dale Chihuly's glass sculpture installation called The Sun and Black Niijima Floats.

Some of you might know this already, but I am a massive fan of the art of glass-blowing, and I have tried my hand at it a few times. Chihuly is one of my favorite glass artists because he effortlessly unites color, light, form, and space to deliver uniquely immersive experiences. Chihuly has completed ambiti…

Gardeners Not Mechanics: How to Cultivate Change at Work

I recently came across a book that intrigued me from the moment I read the title, Gardeners Not Mechanics: How to Cultivate Change at Work by Gary Lloyd. I thoroughly enjoyed the ideas that Gary shared creating lasting change and how to approach it. As Gary points out, gardeners cannot predict or control their environments. Instead, they must balance art and science, proceed through trial and error, then nourish and support their crop. Likewise, leaders seeking to effect change in their organiza…

Falling in Love with Learning: Begin with Inspiration

FallInLoveLearn

"Learning begins with inspiration. It's the engine behind a student's motivation and the glue that makes ideas stick." – David Perell

Over the past few years, I have been delving deeper into the world of neuroscience and exploring how we learn. I have been fascinated with what I have uncovered and it has left me with more questions, which is good because it keeps the journey going. When I came across a recent essay by David Perell, titled How Learning Happens, I was taken back because he hit it…

Inspiring Vision: Amy Genser

AmyGenser

This piece of art comes from multimedia artist Amy Genser who creates stunning depictions of ocean reefs using nothing but canvas, paint and rolled paper. She has an obsession with texture, pattern, and color. The natural world is a clear source for Amy’s work. She is fascinated by the flow of water, the organic irregularity of plants and flowers, rock formations, moss, and seaweed. Her artwork brings to mind aerial landscape views, satellite imagery, and cellular biological processes. Check out…
